Istumbled, my foot catching on a vine, causing me to almost face plant in the middle of one of the Thompson's long fields. There was no moon, not even a little sliver. I had my phone out and was shielding its flashlight feature with my hand while pointing it at the ground, hoping it wouldn't get spotted by anyone we didn't want to get spotted by.

"Put that away," Zoey hissed.

The woman was like a cat who'd studied ballet. I hadn't heard her trip once, not in the entire way here.

Me…? Zoey'd parked a good ten minute's walk down the road in a little field inlet, next to a sagging, barbed wire fence that looked like it used to hold something in but didn't any longer. We then walked the curvy, shoulderless road in the all-but pitch black. I'd almost fallen off the road's sudden drop-off edges twice. Then once reaching the Thompson's farm, I'd walked face first into the side of a shed, tripped on vines twice and had gone full heels up when I fell over Cinderella's lost pumpkin.

I muttered a few colorful words as I turned my phone's light off and stuck the contraption in my back pocket. I'd never seen anything so pretty as the golden light that shone through the windows of the little cabin on the other side of the field—the cabin Lisa and Shane were temporarily calling their home. It was like a beacon.

I did my best to follow in Zoey's footpath in hopes that some of her catlike instincts would lend themselves to me through the sake of proximity. A lilt of laughter drifted to me as if on the air. I grabbed Zoey's arm and tugged her down with me into a deep squat.

"What?" Zoey asked, her voice on edge as if wondering if she needed to fight or flee.

I held onto her and listened. Straining my ears. Was that…? There! More laughter.

I wiggled my hold on Zoey's shoulder, the fabric of her shirt bunching beneath my touch as I directed her gaze. The Thompson's farmhouse sat at the end of the long field we were crossing. It had to be over a football field's length away. Golden light spilled from its wraparound porch, and movement teased my sight. A screendoor opened. Somebody stood, somebody else stepped. There were more than just two people there.

"I think Lisa and Shane are at the Thompson's house." I kept my voice low, but not as low as I'd been doing previously.

"It is dinner time," she said.

That tracked. If I had people living on my land, I'd want to spend time with them to get a better sense of them, too. And that thought made my stomach knot and twist.

"Should we be worried about the Thompsons?" I asked. If they were having dinner with Lisa and Shane, that meant they could be having dinner with either one or two murderers.

"I'd worry more about their company if something goes sideways," Zoey said.

Mmmmm. Concern still niggled at me, but also… Mary Thompson scared me.
